Workshops
7-11 Rhythms Outside the Corner Store (Jeff of the Lost Gypsies) Come to this workshop to spend some time exploring outside of the more common 4 and 6 peat percussion rhythms. This workshop is aimed at those who are comfortable with basic hand drumming techniques and are looking to lay down some more unconventional grooves. Jeff will explore less frequent time signatures and rhythms with a base of 5, 7 and 11 beats per bar. Please bring your own Slurppie®, Big Gulp®, and Swedish berries®. (1.5 hours)
AA/NA Meeting (Friends of Bill W.) Not everyone is comfortable with the well of Dionysus, gold of Aegir's Cauldron, Kvasir's Blood or the products of Faeries Wings. Come together and find support for your path in life from a community of sober, magic loving people.
Ancient Egyptian Concept of the Individual (Anat) This lecture will explore the Ancient Egyptian's belief that every person has 6 "facets." The BA, KA, AB, Shadow, Body and AKH, with specific attention given to the BA. Each facet/agent is believed to be alive, cognizant of their surroundings and capable of interaction. At the end of this lecture Anat will share a secret Ancient Egyptian prayer/spell that was passed down from Pharaoh to successor that will make one's soul or BA, more powerful.
Archaeology of Gotland, Sweden (Shane Hultquist) Shane participated in archeological digs on the island of Gotland, Sweden. The stratum he was working on was from the Viking Age. Gotland itself had a unique culture during the Viking Age, being the only location where picture stones were produced. Many famous images (such as the Valknot) are taken from these stones. He will talk about the site he helped excavate, as well as the archeology of the island as a whole.
Archery (Helmut) Helmut will be demonstrating archery and facilitating practice shooting and perhaps a little friendly competition. Everyone must come entirely sober, ready to take responsibility for safety of those around them at the event. (Staff Note: All children (participants or spectators) must be accompanied by an adult.)
Argentine Tango (Gavin and Yvonne Frost) This dance seems to have become a favorite at pagan/Wiccan gatherings in the States. It is a snap for beginners, and it's also the sexiest dance you can do in public. You don't even have to hear the beat; instead you dance to the mood of the music, as you feel it with this partner. Ladies, if he doesn't lead, you stand still. Believe it or not, standing-still is an official step: the parada. Gentlemen, you haven't lived until you've danced the tango in close hold and raised your macho-index to its highest. Guys, remember: Joe Montana and John Madden are trained dancers. If you can walk, you can dance.
Auction 101 (The Colonel) Have you ever wanted to learn how to speak like an auctioneer? It takes practice. This workshop will teach the basics of auctioneering. You will learn ways to develop an auctioneer's chant. You will also learn how to take bids and seek bids from the audience. Participants will receive handouts from these handouts participants will be able to practice their chant all week. Participants will be able to use their new skills in a special consignment auction to be held on Saturday. Donations of $1.00 for handouts will be appreciated. This workshop is open to all ages.

Consignment Auction (The Colonel) This is a small collection of Pagan-related items that have come from several of Fraser's consignors over the past year. The items will be auctioned by Fraser and those who have taken the Auction 101 workshop. This will be a short auction. If you have anything that you would like to consign please contact Fraser. Please note that bidders for both auctions must register and receive a bidder number. Registration will be open 30 minutes before the start of each sale at the workshop location.
Covens vs Solitaries (Scarlet Cougar) Welcome to an open discussion about the pros and cons of both paths of the Craft. What is it like to walk the path of a solitary? What is it like to walk the path of a covener? Learn what to watch out for and how to seek a coven and how to make the most of your solitary path! How do you take more advanced steps and what resources are there for you in Canada?
Crawling Through Crowley's Hole (Gina Ellis and Alex DelBusso) "Watch for the safety of your soul, when you go crawling through Crowley's hole." Or, at least watch out for the police … or soccer hooligans … or goth kids. Alex and Gina visited the ruins of Aleister Crowley's 'Abbey of Thelema' in Cefalu, Sicily, and have the photos of their adventures to share with all of you armchair travelers. If the audience is interested, they also have photos from the Valley of the Temples, Lake Nemi (inspiration for 'The Golden Bough').

We can make this branch of the multiverse the one in which we succeed in healing ourselves, each other, and the planet. Laurien will explain what the heck a multiverse is anyway, Schroedinger's cat, morphogentic fields and why we have already manifested the good world. As an added bonus, there will be simple arts and crafts!!!
Crochet Circle (Storm) Inspired by amazing wares for sale at Wiccan Fest, Storm was besieged by persistent handy-craft fanatics who somehow missed learning to Crochet. Storm has agreed to show copious number of people how to crochet. If you can, please bring your own yarn and crochet hook (5 - 7mm). Some patterns will be available, or you can just come to learn how to crochet. Bring your own patterns, if you have one you want to start or are having trouble with one. But if you are interested and just are reading this on-site at KG, come anyway. Extra wool will be available, and you can buy a hook from Storm for a nominal fee. It is recommended that you stick to the plain worsted stuff. Nothing fluffy, fuzzy, pom-pom-ish, etc. It's too hard to see the stitches when you are learning.
Drumheading Workshop: Squonga (Raun Dupuis) The "Squonga" is a funky drum design with deep-rich soul, designed by the drum-man Raun himself! At this workshop you can finalize the building of your own Squonga. For a $150 materials fee Raun will walk you through putting a head on one of two sizes of pre-fabricated drum and lacing it for positive vibrations. He will even show you a few moves for how to lay down a groove on this unique hand drum. (Staff Note: If you miss his workshop or don't have the coin at the moment, no matter! Come by his booth in vendors and you can work something out for another time.)
Drumming Foundations (Ja Sonier) As with a house, a strong foundation will make for a strong drummer. This workshop is for those who wish to learn to drum or more advanced players who wish to reinforce their already existing skills. The focus will be on West African djembe styles and technique, though we can touch on other percussion if participants wish. We'll cover the basic tones of the drum and learn how to combine these with a sense of time into rhythm and groove. We'll look at different rhythms to play and we will also explore the possibilities and magic of the drumming circle. Participants will walk away from this with a good sense of how to be able to drum at the nightly drum and dance festivities. Please bring your own drum (and any extras you might have for others to learn on) as there will not be drums provided. (An hour and a half.)
Energy Work for Couples (Hawk and Wolf) Learn new ways to stretch out your personal energies and relax your partner into a warm, soothing journey. Using simple yet effective energy transfer techniques you will learn how to use your own balance to create a soothing space for both you and your partner. This is for consenting pairs of individuals to explore and practice. Single individuals may attend to learn theory however practical application does require a partner with which you have a good trust foundation, who are both of age of consent.
Gardnerian Wicca: An Introduction (Karen Dales) Gerald B. Gardner was the instigator for a new religious revolution - the return of Witchcraft, or Wicca as it is called today, into the public view. Did GBG 'invent' it? You'll have to wait for Philip Heselton's biography of Gerald Gardner to come out to answer that in any definitive way. This workshop will be a basic 101 on what Gardnerian Craft is and what it isn't and will be a perfect opportunity for the attendee to ask questions and receive one Gardnerian's answers.
Gavin and Yvonne Tell All (Gavin and Yvonne Frost) This discussion was first held at Springfield (Arkansas) Pagan Pride Day in 2006. It is an unscripted chat from Gavin and Yvonne on the how, where, when, and why of the founding of Wicca. Learn about the roots of Wicca from those who lived through its conception. Wicca is based on a solid philosophical foundation grounded in independent thinking that started with the Age of Enlightenment and continues into the modern period. In this presentation the Frosts identify many overlooked heroes and martyrs who turn out to have been formative in Wicca. Despite the accounts in several recent books and Wikipedia, the Frosts assert that the founder of Wicca was not Gerald Gardner since they do not feel that he defined a spirituality to go with his magical path. The Frosts positions can be controversial but you need not agree with them to attend! (Staff Note: KG fosters respectful debate and differences of opinion.)
Geocaching is Fun! (Shane Hultquist) Learn how to find the Leprechaun's gold! Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. It will explain the difference between the two paths, introduce some of the older and newer groups within Stregheria and give a basic introduction into some of the spells and cures of the Strega.
Introduction to the Runes (MC Perron) In the recent past, the runes have become a popular subject of study for Pagans and Heathens alike; countless books and websites have been devoted to the subject. While some of this work is excellent, much of it should be avoided. The aim of this workshop is to present information that will help you avoid many well-known pitfalls through an approach to the runes that considers them within their traditional historic, religious, and cultural context. MC will not be going over the meaning of individual runes in detail, but rather will take a broader approach to the subject.
Kubb Tournament, 1st Annual (Shane Hultquist) We will be hosting our first ever Kubb Tournament this year. Kubb is a wonderful Scandinavian game originating in Gotland, Sweden. It started as teams of Vikings lobbing hunks of firewood at each other. It has involved into an amusing pastime which is a bit like a cross between lawn darts and lawn bowling. This tournament, depending on how many sign up, will either be singles competition, or team competition. Just know that ANYONE can play. Although, we will have to cap the age limit to those 10 years old or over. After all, we are throwing big sticks around! No skill or experience required or desired.
Landspirits: The Heart of Heathen Practices? (MC Perron) Many modern Asatruar place a great deal of emphasis on the Germanic gods and goddesses as well as the concept of honour, personal deeds and oath-taking and fulfillment. When we consider our lore (regardless of local or temporality), we recognize the central role played by "lesser" or local divinities (e.g. landspirits, wights, and landvaettir) within Germanic culture and religious practice. In this workshop, MC will explore this important approach to worship that is still at the heart of Heathen practice today.

Come learn about his role as the founder of Gatherings, wherein the folk would leave behind their every-day work to gather and trade, make and enforce laws, re-count myths and perform magic and rites of passage
Magical Monogamy: Not Just for Christians (Pat Gilliland) Monogamy … Old Fashioned? Out of date? A tool of the patriarchal oppressors? Heck no! Monogamy is alive and well in the Pagan communities. In a world of ever shifting relationships and new relationship possibilities, monogamy remains a popular option. We will examine why monogamy remains both viable and popular and look at how it works physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Make Your Own Pocket Meditation Beads (Jasper Moon) Beads, as instruments of prayer and meditation, have been an important fixture of most spiritual traditions for centuries. Today, nearly two-thirds of the world's population pray or meditate with beads. Prayer beads have a variety of forms and meanings, but the basic purpose is the same: to assist the worshiper in reciting and counting specific prayers or incantations. Jasper Moon will look at some of the different traditions around the world and a bit of their history. Many Pagans now embrace prayer and meditation beads as spiritual tools and have found that they are an ideal addition to their daily practice. The set that participants will make at the workshop will be small enough to be carried with you anywhere. They will be constructed with palm wood beads from the Philippines, plus four natural gemstone beads representing the four elements & directions of the magickal universe: air/east (yellow), fire/south (red), water/west (blue) & earth/north (green), and one large openwork metal bead to represent Spirit or Goddess. The leather lacing will be long enough to add your own amulets or charms to reflect your personal practices. Please bring them along to include. Also in your kit will be a suggested 'Devotion to the Elements' that you can use or modify to suit your own goals/needs/purposes, plus a printout on how to care for, cleanse and use your meditation beads. (Class Limit: 20 participants, others welcome to sit in and listen. Materials Fee: $10)

Laurien will share her vision of how better communicating with our bodies means being better cells in the planet's body. She will teach techniques of muscle testing and discuss the gifts in our health and life challenges. Laurien will also demonstrate a medical intuitive reading.
Megalithic Monuments of Northern Europe (Gavin and Yvonne Frost) A presentation with slides from Gavin and Yvonne's trips to world-wide megalithic sites. Here you will see a few of the 50,000 standing stones and stone circles in northern Europe, and glance at other sites around the world. In addition to the mysterious carvings of Gavrinis and the non-alignment of the five-thousand-plus stones at Carnac, the talk discusses ley lines and the Measure inherent in your own ritual circle. For the mathematicians there will be a few generalized observations on the Megalithic Yard, the Earth-Commensurate Foot, the Golden Section (known to and used by Frank Lloyd Wright) and 'e', the root of natural logarithms.
New Pagan Chants and Songs (Gina Ellis) Tired of 'Return, Return, Return'? If everything she touches changes, why do we keep singing the same thing?! Even if you are not getting tired of the old standby chants, it is fun to expand your repertoire. Gina has some new stuff, and, if you do too, bring it along! (Staff Note: Sound recording devices are welcome.)
Ninety-nine Ways Good Witches Go Bad (Gavin and Yvonne Frost) This fun workshop is guaranteed to make you think. One of the most popular of Gavin and Yvonne's repertoire, it is a crossover presentation aimed at those with some experience of ritual workings. Gavin and Yvonne guarantee you will suddenly experience a fabulous improvement in your working if you simply get rid of the errors we all commit. This how-not-to workshop offers some clues about ways to correct the goofs that we all make, whether through accident, ignorance, selfishness, or stupidity. It offers a cautionary tale based on Gavin and Yvonne's new book Good Witches Fly Smoothly. Plan to join in the discussion and to share your own autobiographical experiences; they may open the eyes of other attendees to how magic and lifestyle can go wrong and be corrected. Imagine a Witch on a broom flying backward and falling off. Well, here the Witch has a parachute. Come and figure out the errors in the story Gavin tells, and win a copy of the book (though you have to promise to review it on Amazon).
Our Community (Apaulo) This workshop is a discussion of how the Pagan community has change our lives and how we can preserve it. What we can do as Pagans to spread the word of the magick we have found? How can we pass on the love of our gods and our community to our most important resource, our people?
Pagan Chant Along (Jamie) Girls do you remember spending time around the fire with your sisters in your little kinder-coven's? The robes were not so nice (polyester blue) and the semi-paramilitary structure of the organization could be trying. But, oh the chanting! (Seems a bit like Fest, but with more clothes.) Anyway, at this workshop all boys and girls are welcome to come and chant and sing-along together.
Pagan Publishing Panel (Andy Biggers, moderator) Books are very important to many Pagans; as spiritual guides, friends, and fun. We are now lucky enough to have a number of authors and publishers in our local community. The workshop, moderated by Andy Biggers, will be in the format of a panel discussion where a number of Pagans involved with publishing will talk about their experiences. Brendan Myers has published Pagan books, Robin Benson is the illustrator of a Pagan children's book, Karen Dales has written dark adult fantasy fiction, Randaidh "Gil" Waugh writes in Scottish Gaelic, and Edain Duguay runs Wyrdwood Publications, a Pagan e-publishing house. (More people may be added to the panel, if you are interested please contact Maryanne Pearce at austin.lawrence@rogers.com.)
Partner Yoga (Devin Johnstone) The embrace of yoga brings people closer together and gives us a wonderful opportunity to share energy while stretching, breathing and bringing our minds into stillness. Bring your partner, friend or a complete stranger or come alone and make a new friend. Postures will be easy and simple enough for everyone to enjoy. (Staff Note: Not to be confused with "Pardner Yoga" which involves a lot more ten gallon hats and less flexibility … and … maybe a cow.)
Poetry for Pagans (Ja Sonier) When we go beyond our everyday words, and into the truth of things, it is there that poetry can be made. And sometimes, too, it's about the delight of playing with words and sounds. This workshop is for anyone and everyone who can hold a pen and wants to be honest and/or playful on paper. We will explore content and creative process, though not necessarily form. Through a series of challenges and games, we will write several pieces, and take turns reading them out loud, should people wish. We are already poets-the workshop is to help us remember this and exercise some creative muscles. Please bring pen and paper if you have some; though there will also be some of these materials on hand. (An hour and a half.) Staff Poem: Rose are Red, Violets are Blue; Ja's pretty nifty and kinda cute, too.
Poi for Beginners (Gabrielle) Spinning spirals of fire, dancing in darkness with flame! Poi is an extreme sport, dance and performance art all wrapped into one. Although at this workshops you will be working with swinging soft weights in socks and not flames on the ends of chains, you will learn to principles of this ancient art
Pushing Hands (Risingpheonix) Pushing hands is a sister martial art to tai-chi, called "tui-shou" in Chinese. It is the art of taking one attack in the form of a push and to redirect it so that you are not harmed bv it. It can be practiced with a partner or alone. All learning will be slow and safe and done with respect of all participating. This martial art deeply imbued with Taoist philosophy and is the living application of yin-yang theory.
Redneck Games (with Bubba) Once again, Bubba and the Merry Band of Rednecks will take to the beach (or wherever they passed out last) and host the 2nd ever KG Redneck Games. Last year there were 'aight' competitors to the contest. However, it would seem that the women-folk decided they were not "redneck" enough to join in. Bubba wants to make this perfectly clear … female humans are encouraged to show some of these boys how things are really done. What are the events this year? Hah … Like we would tell you that in advance! However, if you would like participate, please see Bubba or one of the other rednecks the day before the games to ensure that the supply of props does not run out. Bring your lawn chair, plaid shirt, ball cap and chewing tobacco, and prepare for a wee bit of insanity and see if you have what it takes to join the Bubba Clan.
Responsible Non-Monogomy; a.k.a. Polyamory (Lynne and Lazlo) What's it like to be in love with more than one person and be open about it with all involved? What a concept! What is "polyamory" anyway? What isn't it? What shouldn't it be? What could it be? Is it complicated? Where are the limits? Slippery slope? Is it for you? How does it apply to monogamy? Meet Lynne and Laszlo who have been doing this for eleven years and wouldn't have it any other way.
Rhythm Wonders Playshop (Raun Dupuis) Who needs a drum? Every child knows you can bang on anything and get your groove on! Raun will be doing an on-site 'found-sound' musical jam workshop. Bring something that sounds like a musical instrument, but isn't one … you know things that sounds like instruments when you strum, hit, bang, thwap, blow, plink, and shake them? Come and contribute to the sound party! Raun will show you how, no matter your level of ability.

Comunn Gaidhlig Ottawa will present short workshops on basic Scottish Gaelic and what the organization is planning to bring to the National Capital Region in Gaelic learning resources. After the workshop you will be able to greet others in Gaelic and will learn some basic spelling and pronunciation. (Staff Note: No facility is Gaelic or language acquisition expected or required!)
Sex Magic: History, Theory, and Practice (Gavin and Yvonne Frost) Many things can power a ritual. Gender difference is a basic human driving force, though there are many pitfalls to its use in ritual and in small group situations. Here we show how it can be harnessed successfully and ethically as a means to a higher end in a way that is almost un-American. Despite popular assumptions, when men and women sit down and candidly discuss how to arrange such rituals, common ground and agreement can usually be found. This workshop is based on Gavin and Yvonne's book The Bible of Sex Magic and Enlightenment. It distills more than 50 years of research with hundreds of groups in the Church of Wicca, starting with the solitary, moving to the duet, and then on to the small chamber orchestra. Techniques for raising power through gender differences, the control of the raised energy, and the ultimate sending will be described. A range of methods will be discussed for the raising of power through copulation and orgasm. (Staff Note: You must be over the age of 18 to attend this workshop. This is a clothed lecture; no touching.)
Show Tunes Spontaneous Silliness (Laurie the Herbwalker) The hills are alive with the sound of doing the time-warp again! After the Bardic there are a lot of performers who do not enter, but who like to get together for impromptu sing-a-longs. Last year a group gathered in the Gazebo and starting singing Show Tunes, among other things. But … horror of horrors … No one knew all of the lyrics to "Rocky Horror Show"! Those present vowed that we would bring their music and lyrics to KG this year to get together and do OUTRAGEOUS renditions of musicals this year. Please try to dress the part and put together your best Broadway Musical outfit (Frankenfurter? Maria von Trapp? Rum Tum Tugger?). Bring your lyrics and music and "belt it out"! Instruments are as welcome as voices.
Simple Revelations (Brendan "Cathbad" Myers) What is meant by 'the sacred'? What is 'the holy'? What is a 'revelation'? When people use the word "sacred", they often mean a building, an artifact, a ritual, a book, a time of year, or something like that. Alternatively, they might refer to a kind of experience, or a mental and emotional state. In this talk, Brendan's hypothesis is that human relationships of all kinds - with each other, with the natural world, with our material culture, etc. - are the real root of the sacred. Loving couples are only one of the obvious examples. But something divine also exists in the relationship between parents and children, young people and elders, natural connections in the environment, hunters and animals, healers and patients, craftspeople and their work, and so on.

Tarot in Ten Minutes (Gina Ellis) Tarot is an occult art, but that does not mean studying it has to be occult, too. Many tarot books and teachers make tarot reading seem complex. They don't let you in on the actual 'secret behind the veil' because they obfuscate with frills, bells and whistles (Renumber the Trumps! Complex Systems! Pretty Pictures!). Gina will help you cut through the B.S. to clear out the tarot clutter to help you access the tarot's own timeless realm.
Teaching an Old Pagan New Tricks? Brining The Technology to the Circle (Mike Winkler) Technology is all around us in our everyday lives. Like our ancestors shouldn't we incorporate our world into our craft? Do you use regular candles outside or LED candles? Do you have a Book of Shadows or a Kindle of Shadows? Has Technology come to far to exclude it from our Craft lives? How can the modern age help us worship the old gods without losing our traditions? Do you consider yourself a Techno Pagan, Urgan, or something else entirely, come on out to discuss how technology is creeping into the craft and what you do to welcome its presence. Participants are encouraged to bring something comfortable to sit on.

Wicca 101: The Modern Spiritual Path (Gavin and Yvonne Frost) Here is a general overview class on Wiccan philosophy, something which many Wiccans need. This presentation is designed for Wiccans, pagans, and the general public as information that (we hope) will lower fear and increase understanding, thus reducing danger to all Wiccans. It presents a detailed exposition of the underlying philosophy of the Church of Wicca as it has developed over the forty-some years since the Church's founding. Understand the Deity and the goddesses, together with a look at each pentagramic tenet, ranging from the Wiccan Rede through Reincarnation. We use the pentagram and progress the tenets through the three circles, to give an in-depth comprehension of a path to enlightenment. Wicca (the Craft) is not a fixed, dogmatic religion; it continues to evolve since the Frosts founded the Church and School. The tolerance of diversity found in the Church of Wicca nurtures a truly democratic way of spirituality. Here is your chance to reach a definitive understanding of each of the Church's tenets.
Wicca 501: Power Raising and Circle Dancing (Gavin and Yvonne Frost) In this workshop, everyone can join in and have fun. If you need a psychic healing, come to this one! Psychic healing is one of the most rewarding priorities any coven can have. Pursuing the practice to the fullest extent possible requires the ability to raise and send power. The workshop starts with the basics and shows how you can add to your repertoire methods effective in storing, tuning, and sending power -- methods known since time immemorial. Learn to understand traditional tables of correspondences and to construct a new one fine-tuned to fit you best for the group you work with. Attendees examine construction and use of stone goddesses, why the dawn sign is usually not used, and ways to incorporate many other techniques that will raise your success rate. Starting with the basics of personal polarity and with the Wiccan shuffle, then moving on through the Gardnerian grapevine to more complex steps, Gavin and Yvonne will show you how to design a power dance. If you brought shoes without a tread, Wear Them; If Not, Be Ready To Dance Barefoot Or In Your Socks.
Zar Dancing and Spiritual Re-awakening (Anat) This workshop will consist of two parts. In the first half of the session is the "Darkness" and will be a group participation in a deeply rooted tradition of Arabic Zar dance. The purpose of this dance was for women to cleanse themselves of negative feelings and tension. Once we have purged ourselves we are then free to rejoice in the welcoming in of our Goddesses in all her light and positive energy. After the time of Darkness we will have "Light and Joy" and have made room to encompass and charge ourselves with grounding and positive energies with more group dancing. "Our hope is for women to learn to practice doing this and keeping within us thus becoming positive beacons of the Goddesses' ways not only for ourselves but for all of whom we meet." - Rose Goulart (Attendance is restricted to adult women were born female.)
